iRiver Spinn Its not often that manufacturers move away from the tried and tested. They cant be blamed for that if it works why change it? Well gladly iRiver are not a manufacturer that applies this sort of logic as youll see with their brand new Spinn. Spinn a new concept What makes the Spinn such a different player? First off its easier to say what its not. Its not a gimmick that has one outstanding feature and disappointing specs under the hood. What iRiver have done is take the best player they can physically make with todays technology and then apply a revolutionary operating system that makes everything else seem clumsy. Touch screen is a major talking point in todays market but very few players do it well. No matter how well it is implemented you will always lose a tactile interaction with the setting or menu function. Well with the Spinn this isnt an issue. It uses a large touch screen but adds a unique analogue spin dial on the edge of the player to move through menus. Combining the best of both with the simplicity thats made iRiver products so great in recent years. Technology Component wise its easy to produce a player with a gimmick and rely on that gimmick to make it sell. Its far more difficult to produce something genuinely class leading with topnotch custom technology and then package it in such a way that its attractive to the gadget freak and the fashion conscious market at the same time. The Spinn without a doubt comfortably straddles those markets. Screen The first thing youll notice about the stunningly slim Spinn is the huge 3.3 screen it packs into such a pocketable player. The new NU Dolphin from New Universe Technologies is an MP3 player tailored for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts. The design concept is to create a portable music device that can be worn by swimmers and other water sport athletes while keeping the impact on their athletic performance to minimum. The NU design team come up with this ultra light weight ultra compact player that weighs only 25g with a dimension of 60 x 21 x 21mm. Its cylindricalshaped casing features a minimalist outlook with all control buttons located on one side and the headphone jack on the other side. The earphone attaches to the player via a special screwin jack to keep the device watertight. Both the earphone and the player were tested to comply with IPx7 international water resistant standard. The earphone employs a special nonwoven fabric membrane to keep the speaker vibration plate dry while maintaining a high quality sound output. The earpieces are attached with a soft silicon earplug that fits snugly in the ears. The earplugs not only keep the earphones dry but also prevent the earphones from coming loose during vigorous activities. Operating time for the NU Dolphin is roughly 8 hours when fully charged and recharging time is about 1.5 hours. Recharging (and file downloading) can be done via USB port. Initial release of the NU Dolphin is designed to be worn on swimmer goggles; there will also be an optional armband for surfing and other activities.
